1. After 16 years and billions in hidden fees, a jury just told Ticketmaster: it wasn’t your imagination.

A federal jury in Manhattan found that Live Nation and its Ticketmaster subsidiary operated as an illegal monopoly, harming consumers, artists, and venues. A second trial will now determine remedies — which could include forcing Live Nation to sell concert venues or break up the company entirely.

2. 29 people have died in ICE custody this year. On Wednesday, a federal court said: not in this warehouse.

The US District Court in Maryland halted ICE’s plan to convert an 825,000-square-foot warehouse near Hagerstown into a 1,500-bed detention facility. ICE had purchased the property for $102 million and awarded a $113 million retrofit contract — while bypassing required environmental reviews and while Washington County’s sewage system was already near capacity. Construction is now paused indefinitely. The system of checks doing what it was built to do.

3. The federal government just invested $50 million in psychedelic mental health research — and it has bipartisan backing.

For the roughly 30% of people with depression or PTSD whose symptoms don’t respond to standard medications, a new federal research pathway just opened. An executive order commits $50 million through ARPA-H to match state investments in psychedelic therapy research. The order also directs the FDA to issue National Priority Vouchers for three breakthrough-designation psychedelics, cutting review timelines from months to weeks. No psychedelic has been approved yet. But the science is now federally funded and fast-tracked.

4. The US DOJ is suing states that pass AI laws. States are passing them anyway.

Governors in Oregon, Idaho, Nebraska, Tennessee, and Maine signed AI safety legislation into law — including chatbot disclosure requirements, protections for minors from AI manipulation, and prohibitions on AI impersonating mental health professionals. This comes despite a White House executive order directing the DOJ to challenge “onerous” state AI laws and threatening to condition federal infrastructure funding on compliance. More than 35 states have active AI legislation in 2026. When the federal government stepped back, the states stepped in.

5. AI data centers need baseload clean power. This 1.7-gigawatt geothermal deal just locked it in.

Fervo Energy and Turboden — a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries company — signed a three-year framework to supply turbines for up to 35 of Fervo’s 50 MW “GeoBlock” power plants, totaling 1,750 MW of 24/7 carbon-free power. The companies are currently in the advanced commissioning stage of Phase I at Cape Station in Beaver County, Utah, with startup expected later this year. Once online, it will be the first commercial-scale enhanced geothermal project in the world.

6. Africa just built more solar in three months than it did in all of last year.

Africa commissioned roughly 970 MW of utility-scale solar in Q1 2026 — the highest quarterly addition ever recorded, and more capacity than the entire continent installed in all of 2025. Total installed utility-scale capacity across Africa now stands at 26.15 GW, led by South Africa and Egypt, with strong momentum building in Morocco, Nigeria, Zambia, and Namibia. Africa currently has 133 GW of utility-scale solar in active development. What was promise a decade ago is now delivery at speed.

7. Renters can’t put panels on their roofs. So Americans built a 10-gigawatt workaround.

US community solar — shared solar projects that let renters, apartment dwellers, and households with shaded roofs buy into off-site solar — crossed 10 gigawatts of installed capacity in April 2026. Community solar has made clean energy accessible to households that couldn’t otherwise participate in the transition. At current growth rates, the sector is on track to reach 30 GW nationwide by 2030.

8. Pennsylvania’s shale gas wells might be about to produce clean power instead.

The US Department of Energy announced a $14 million project to convert a horizontal shale gas well in Pennsylvania’s Appalachian Utica Shale into an enhanced geothermal system — the first EGS demonstration east of the Mississippi. The project will test whether the same drilling technology that extracted gas from the ground can now tap the earth’s heat to make 24/7 carbon-free electricity. If it works, it offers a replicable template for hundreds of similar wells across Appalachia.

💉IRENA: The World Just Added 692 GW of Non-Fossil Energy — The Largest Annual Surge Ever.

While people freak out over fossil fuel supply, non-fossil energy just had its biggest year ever, and the war should only increase demand.

The world added 692 gigawatts of non-fossil energy in 2025 — the largest annual surge ever recorded — pushing total global clean capacity to 5,000+ GW, according to a report released Tuesday. Solar led the way with 511 GW added, wind followed with 159 GW, and non-fossils accounted for 85.6% of all new electricity capacity built globally last year. IRENA’s Director-General said it best: “Countries that invested in the energy transition are weathering this crisis with less economic damage, as they boost energy security, resilience and competitiveness.”

💉UK Record Wind + Solar: Britain Saved £1 Billion in Gas Imports in a Single Month

Everyone's energy bill is spiking because of the war. Britain just proved there's a way out.

In March 2026, the UK generated record levels of wind and solar electrons — avoiding importing the equivalent of 21 terawatt hours of gas, equivalent to roughly 18 fully loaded LNG tankers. That would have cost around £1 billion at current Iran-war prices. Wind output was up 38% year-on-year for the month. Combined, wind and solar hit 11 terawatt hours in March — a new record. Gas generation fell 25% compared to March 2022, when fossil prices last spiked. “For the first time, we’re bringing deep geothermal power to British homes — a clean, constant energy source right beneath our feet,” Octopus Energy CEO Greg Jackson said this month. The less fossils feeding the grid, the less the war can touch your bill.

💉India Is Now the World's Third-Largest Solar Producer — Rooftop solar is now powering over 3 Million Homes

The world's most energy-stressed major economy just became its third-largest solar producer.

India officially reached 143.6 GW of installed solar capacity as of February 2026 — making it the world's third-largest solar producer — after installing a record 37.8 GW in 2025 alone. Non-fossil production now exceeds 51% of India's total electricity capacity, a milestone originally targeted for 2030, achieved five years early. The government's rooftop solar program has now reached 3 million households. India's budget allocation for non-fossil energy rose 30% this year. One billion people are outrunning the fossil fuel model.

💉46 Countries — Including Major Oil Producers — Just Confirmed They're Attending a Fossil Fuel Phaseout Summit

While oil prices soar, 46 countries — including oil producers — are meeting this month to plan the end of fossil fuels.

The first-ever international conference on transitioning away from fossil fuels will take place April 28-29 in Santa Marta, Colombia — a major coal export port in the world's fifth-largest coal-producing nation. 46 countries have confirmed attendance, including Brazil, Norway, Mexico, Angola, and Trinidad and Tobago — nations whose economies depend on fossil fuel exports. The conference is hosted by Colombia and the Netherlands and will develop concrete legal, economic, and social pathways for a just transition. The venue sends an intentional signal: fossil-fuel-dependent countries increasingly want a way out, and they're building the roadmap themselves.

💉CFS SPARC Fusion Reactor: 70% Complete and Now Selling Magnets Commercially

The fusion reactor being assembled outside Boston just started generating revenue — from its own magnets.

Commonwealth Fusion Systems announced Thursday it has sold high-temperature superconducting magnets to Realta Fusion — the second commercial deal of its kind and a sign the company is generating near-term revenue while SPARC, its demonstration reactor, nears completion. SPARC is now 70% complete, with all 18 magnets expected to be installed by summer 2026 and first plasma targeted for 2027. The magnets can generate a 20-tesla magnetic field — roughly 13 times stronger than an MRI machine. The running joke that fusion is always 30 years away is no longer holding.

💉Vietnam Scraps Its Largest LNG Plant in Favor of Renewables as Gulf Prices Spike

Vietnam just cancelled its biggest LNG plant. It’s building renewables instead.

Plans for Vietnam’s largest LNG power plant may be scrapped in favor of a new renewable energy project as soaring gas prices tied to the Iran war have worsened the economics of LNG across Southeast Asia. Vietnam has historically been one of Asia’s fastest-growing LNG markets. The reversal signals that the Gulf disruption is actively accelerating the non-fossil transition in places that were previously seen as locked into fossil fuel expansion — not just in wealthy nations.

💉Arizona's Conservative Supreme Court Blocked Three Anti-Voting Lawsuits in One Day

Voting rights are under threat everywhere in the US. Arizona’s own conservative court just said: not here.

Arizona’s conservative-leaning Supreme Court declined to hear a string of appeals from Republican-backed groups that sought to restrict mail-in ballot verification, allow hand-counting of ballots, and weaken early voting rules. By turning the cases away, the court let lower court rulings stand — preserving systems that make voting more accessible and election results more secure. Taken together, the rejections mark a significant legal victory for voting rights in a state that has been at the center of repeated efforts to reshape election rules since 2020.

💉Federal Appeals Court Blocked Push to Gut $4 Billion in Homelessness Funding

The US administration tried to pull $4 billion from homelessness programs. A federal court just said no.

A federal appeals court rejected the US administration's push to impose new conditions on homelessness funding Wednesday, calling implementation of the changes "immediately destabilizing and disastrous." The ruling upheld a lower court's preliminary injunction blocking the Department of Housing and Urban Development's plan to shift nearly $4 billion away from permanent housing toward programs requiring sobriety and mental health conditions. The appeals court noted that the existing Housing First approach — the target of HUD's overhaul — "has proven effective," citing two decades of bipartisan policy evidence. Without this ruling, the change would have risked pushing 170,000 people, including many disabled adults and veterans, back into homelessness.

💉Vermont Signed One of the Country's Strongest AI Safety Bills into Law

While Washington stalls on AI rules, states are building guardrails themselves.

Vermont’s governor just signed AI safety legislation into law, including provisions protecting neurological rights and restricting AI in health and human services — one of the nation’s most comprehensive state AI frameworks to date. Vermont wasn’t alone: Georgia sent three AI safety bills to Governor Brian Kemp this week, including chatbot disclosure requirements and a prohibition on AI-only insurance coverage decisions. Alabama, Iowa, and Utah all advanced AI safety legislation this session. Thirty-two states are now actively legislating AI conduct — a distributed system of democratic guardrails building without waiting for Congress.

💉A Homelessness Prevention Program Cut Unhousing Rates 78% with a $6,500 Average Investment — Now Going National

Homelessness can be prevented — and it costs less than letting it happen.

A homelessness prevention program in Santa Clara County found that a targeted payment averaging $6,500 — for rent, security deposits, and emergency housing expenses — reduced the likelihood of becoming homeless by 78%, compared to similar households that received no help. A CalMatters investigation found the program, run by Destination: Home, has inspired 10 pilot programs launching across the country in the first large-scale, multi-state test of a prevention-first approach.

I know, it’s been a minute.

I’m writing you all today to announce Climate Tech Cocktails is officially transitioning to Hope Dose.

Questions I imagine are on your mind:

• Will there still be events? Yep. Announcements coming soon.

• What about the podcast? Yes. I enjoy capturing (literally and figuratively) founders & CEOs more than anything. First episode is in the can and more scheduled.

• Any new content? Another yes. A newsletter is in the works.

• Investments? 🤫 slowly, but surely.

• Is he being weak and avoiding the word climate like others?

  No. Climate’s still the core, along with badass people working on other meaningful problems. I’ve grown a lot over the past year+, and as I continue to evolve, I want to be able to color outside of the lines.

I downshifted CTC over the past year+ for personal reasons. I burnt out, I decided to invest as much time, energy, and resources as I could into my mental and physical health. It’s been a journey.

I quickly realized I couldn’t evolve into the person I wanted to be while pumping out content. I wouldn’t press play again until I was ready. So here we are. I’m ready. Are you?

I’d like to dedicate this announcement to my father, who turns 70 today. What can you give someone who has everything? Hope.

So why Hope Dose?

It’s been a term circling my mind for 18 months, and it just won’t die. Over the years, I’ve realized ideas I try my mightiest to kill that refuse to perish are keepers.

The world seems pretty f*d right now. I understand. It’s easy to think that way. In fact, our brains are wired to crave shocking and negative content. Hence, why most forms of media capture and maintain our attention by constantly serving us a deluge of negative information.

War. Rape. Murder. Theft. Lies.

We crave the drama.

I’m a contrarian and believe the world isn’t all that bad.

Who knew being positive would be so edgy? I guess you can say I’m punk positive.

I also believe positivity yields productivity. The powers that be want us to accept their toxic version of reality and give up, so let’s be positively productive.

Ultimately, with Hope Dose, I hope you, the audience, can walk away with a spoon full of hope after consuming our content and realize that maybe, just maybe, we’re not quite f*d, after all.

ICYMI, we did an awesome “back to the basics” Climate Tech Cocktails happy hour in Paris in collaboration with Marble and Wind Capital last week.

We had a room full of not only Parisians, but also badasses who came from other cities just for the event—including Milan, London, and Amsterdam—I know I’m missing others.

You could feel the excitement in the air. Yes, even though governments are failing and speaking untruths about climate change, climate warriors all over the world remain committed to building and scaling solutions—which is why we’ve opted to focus our time and attention on building more bridges in the EU and Canada.

Yes, and the reason why we’re taking a break from NYCW2025. We’re busy expanding the CTC international community and planning for 2026—which is gearing up to be a year of epic proportions for the climate tech movement.

That being said, there are so many awesome events happening at NYCW2025—plug in! Don’t know where to begin? Start with CTVC i.e. Sightline’s event calendar.

As you do network at NYCW—keep in mind that the answer isn’t nationalism, but globalism. Yes, while each city/state/country needs to focus on GDP generation and job creation—capital, talent, partnerships, and knowledge crossing borders is the only way we’re going to solve the climate challenge. Innovation takes collaboration, not isolation. We at CTC want to continue doing our part.

Including…a happy hour in London tomorrow night, building coalitions at The Drop in Malmo, strategy dinners in Berlin, and supporting the first ever Toronto Climate Week.

Oh, and want more dashes of optimism? In the last month alone, CTC portfolio companies Copper closed a Series A funding round led by Prelude Ventures, it’s electric revealed that one of its key cities is now seeing 44% utilization of its curbside EV chargers, and Lightship has officially begun shipping its AE.1 Cosmos.

Climate tech is far from dead, folks.

Keep on keepin’ on.

p.s. while on a stroll in St. James’s park, a pigeon randomly landed on my shoulder and hung out for a minute. Is this a positive sign for animals and climate?

“…and this is only 50…" I think to myself, glutes burning. Holy sh*t. I can’t believe I was walking around with an extra 100 pounds.

The final 25 have been slower despite stretching my fasting and exercise routines to their limits. I can’t wait to eat tonight…marking the completion of another five day fast, preceded by a 48 hour and an additional five day…which were preceded by a 72 hour…so on, so forth. All while walking 6 miles/day, running 8-10 miles/day, sculpt yoga three times/week and two Barry’s sessions/week.

While physically exhausting, the true test is mental. Although my body’s gotten used to fasting at this point, it doesn’t mean I don’t get hungry. “Hunger means loss,” has become my mantra. This is when the real work happens—flatline or win.

I push through. Puncturing fresh cherry tomatoes with my teeth, juice splashing against my cheeks, I can literally sense the vitamin c seeping into my skin, replenishing me. Only four more days and three more pounds. It’s as good as done. Tears fill my eyes.

Losing weight is losing comfort. Shedding lies. I didn’t become obese because I love food—the fat masked the pain from my child/young adulthood. *Overcoming what I can’t discuss here*, I layered on fat for safety and overworked to avoid. Facing the truth, slaying demons, I’m free. What will I become?

The now familiar jabbing of an ink-covered needle draws the number 100 beneath where steel shackles once held me down. My friend Ryan opens the shop door, wandering into Two Cranes dictating his first tattoo observation—noticeably squirming while capturing video of me smiling and joking with Rubberband Dan. “Is that blood?” Ryan’s freaked out. “No, but there will be blood.” Dan chuckles at my movie reference.

Taking a deep breath, I pause to capture the moment. Surrounded by friends—some old and some new—heavy Italian plates pass around a table too small for us. The right kind of cozy.

I blow out candles on a red velvet cake. My favorite. Delirious, I smile and celebrate. I understand life’s a collection of moments—the older I get, the more valuable they become. I embrace this one. I wouldn’t trade seats with anybody.

It’s hard to believe I lost 100lbs, but I did. I added years onto my life, a life filled with potential. If I can fill a 3,000 personal venue to capacity, if I can lose 100 pounds, if I can do a mental 180, what else am I capable of?

Humans can accomplish anything. We just gotta put our minds to it and grit.

During challenging times, as many of us have been facing as of late, I’ve been focusing on what I can control—including my mental and physical health. Yes, taking care of yourself is as important to solving climate change because this battle is a marathon, not a sprint. I’ve also discovered that substantial improvements in mental and physical health have had profound impacts on my life I never imagined. All that being said, I’ve set an audacious goal to lose 25 more pounds in 6 weeks. I’m sharing the note below that I just sent all of my friends because I need help, and maybe this will also help you.

Dear friends,

As some of you know/have realized, I’ve been on a weight loss journey the past 18 months. Yesterday, I did a checkup with my PCP and I weighed in at 225—a loss of 75 pounds—the least I’ve weighed since graduate school, or 15 years ago, and my BMI is officially in the healthy zone. It’s been a slog—no GLP-1s—purely diet and exercise.

I’m reaching out to you today because I need your help and I want to put an audacious goal out into the universe.

I’m 25 pounds away from reaching my ultimate goal of 200 pounds, or a total loss of 100 pounds. I’ve decided to focus on hitting this goal by August 8th, or 6 weeks from now. Why so soon?

🥾I depart for Europe on August 10th to hike the TMB—a total distance of ~110 miles and ~33k feet of cumulative ascent and descent over 11 days. I want to be in the best physical shape of my life when I hit the trail.

👨‍💻I need to hunker down and focus on the next chapter of CTC beginning of September, and will need to return to a balanced meal schedule and maintaining the weight vs weight loss, which is taxing mentally.

🏋🏻I’ve been hovering around the 20 yard line for a few months now, and I need to just suck it up and punch it in.

DC, here we come. Seven hours ahead of me–four driving and three charging. My anticipation of dropping into the capitol during election season provides the boost I need–but first, a pitstop at Cambium Carbon’s Baltimore HQ.

More Trump 2024 signs. More sponsorship rejection calls. More searching for functioning EV chargers. Here I am, entering Maryland. You can’t stop hope, I encourage myself.

Parking behind Cambium Carbon’s facility, Beast batteries low, Theo Hooker, Cambium’s Co-Founder and COO, approaches to greet me. Sliding open the driver side door, iPhone and wireless mics in hand, I stumble out. No lights, kinda camera, action. “Let’s do this!” I tell Theo. I’m on a tight schedule. DC will be a just-in-time delivery.

Theo guides me through Cambium’s production process, the scent of timber wafting through the building. He describes Cambium’s value proposition–simple, yet impactful. Cambium tracks and collects wood waste, processes it, and repurposes the wood to be resold in big box stores, such as Home Depot and Lowe’s. Longer term, Cambium is building a unique database of the US timber supply chain.

Why is Cambium’s work important? Well, the result is not only the reduction in deforestation, but also the reuse reduces CO2 and methane emissions that would have otherwise been emitted by the decomposing wood. A classic waste to value proposition.

Theo gifts me some swag–blocks of Cambium wood. I unplug The Beast from a warehouse electrical outlet and dart for DC . How cool–startup HQ video tour straight to a CTC happy hour event. Yet this is only a taste of what’s possible. Imagining a legit budget for a crew to capture the magic of this adventure, I return to reality as the streets become DC.

I harken back to the days I’d wander through the halls of the Department of Energy, meeting brilliant, kind people working on the future of clean energy. True patriots. What’s their fate if Trump wins, I ponder?

I can sense the importance of this moment in history. Democrats are calm–too calm. If only they saw all of the Trump support I drove through in Michigan and Pennsylvania.

I swing by the Lincoln. What would he think about the current situation? I search Lincoln quotes at red lights. “You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time.” Clearly Lincoln didn’t foresee the internet, social media, or AI…

Approaching the DC metrobar for our event, I take 10 in a nearby parking lot to compose myself after another grueling drive. I change into a fresh shit, brush my teeth, and make notes of the people to thank, notably Vid Mecivic, who answered the CTC bat signal for tour conspirators.

Vid, a (now former) investor at collab fund and Climate DC co-founder, has been nothing but kind throughout. During one of our calls, I was moved to learn they were inspired by Climate Tech Cocktails when forming Climate DC. I hear stories like this on the fly, and when I do, they keep the fire in my belly burning during challenging times.

I pull up to the metrobar entrance and I’m greeted by a videographer. Crazy. I wasn’t mentally prepared to be on video. Maybe this tour thing is a bigger deal than I thought? Getting to know some of the 150+ attendees, I’m encouraged because when I would visit DC pre-Covid there was very little to no climate tech community, and now look at DC. The climate tech boom combined with the application of community building tools clearly changed the game.

Someone approaches, shakes my hand, and says he’s a big fan of the podcast. In his other hand? A roll of toilet paper branded ‘Wasted’. “Here, this is a gift for you!” my new friend says as he hands me the TP. B rilliant tongue and cheek branding. “Wow, this is a first,” I say wryly as I admire the roll. I laugh, but I should probably keep some toilet paper in The Beast. You never know…

My new friend explains that Wasted is a startup he works for that makes porta-potties converting the waste into fertilizer. Ok, this gift makes much more sense now…”Thank you, this has to be the coolest gift I’ve ever received,” I tell him as he snaps selfies of us holding up and admiring the roll of toilet paper. I guess this means I’ve made it…

Speaking of wasted, it’s a Friday night in DC–that’s basically what people do in this city–might as well grab a drink. I execute an Irish Goodbye with an OG DOE-turned-consultant buddy who is more than familiar with the DC bar and restaurant situation, at least according to his IG stories. He takes me to a watering hole called Madhatter.

It’s still early and slow. While we catch up on life, I also sidebar with a few tipsy guys on barstools next to us. Their collared shirts and suits read out-of-towners. In DC for a family member’s wedding, the gentlemen are sipping on the bar’s flagship drink–a massive plastic hat filled to the brim with a dyed concoction consisting of who knows what liquor.

I feel queasy as GW freshman year frathouse memories of trashcan punch flood back. I hand them the Wasted TP as a gift for the groom. In exchange, they sacrifice one of their spiked hats. Oh joy…my friend side-eyes me as I accept their generous donation. “When in Rome,” I tell him, as I taste the beverage. Yep, as gross as I imagined.

We float around town, dropping into a first-come-first-serve standup comedy event, a bar with multiple rooms featuring different themed DJs, and finally a small bar/club where a staff member sprays a fire extinguisher at a patron who is ‘on fire’ getting down to some Latin dance song.

Alright, time to call it a night.

Exhausted, I collapse into bed, alarm set to wake me up in six hours for the next leg of my journey. Destination: Philadelphia.

Suddenly, the windows begin descending. “No, no, no, what the fuck?!?,” I whine out. Did I leave the door open too long? Did I press something on the car key by accident when I sat down? Ugh…doesn’t matter now..the final instructions Sam gave me while backing The Beast out of Grounded’s dock was do not lower the passenger plexiglass “window” or it wouldn’t come back up–noted by bright yellow masking tape reading “No!” covering the window button.

I turn on The Beast and try raising the windows. Nope. Yeah. Damn. The passenger-side isn’t budging. I let out a long sigh, finding appreciation that today’s weather is at least warmish and sunny.

“Stop moping,” I tell myself. I take a quick campground shower and roll out seeking an idyllic Indian Dunes work from home situation. Might as well take advantage of being on the road with Starlink.

I drive on, leaving high speed chases in my wake. I stop at the only convenience store in the area for my caffeine fix. Walking up, I notice a Coffee Served Here sign in the window. Thank goodness…

Bell jingling as I enter, it looks like a run of the mill convenience store. Junk food, fishing line, and a bunch of stuff I don’t need. The clerk, a white man in his 50s wearing a USA hat, is standing behind the counter, eyes set on the TV in front of him blaring Fox News. Trump is about to speak at a campaign rally, apparently.

“Do you have any coffee?,” I ask. The clerk looks me up and down, “Not this time of year,” he fires back. Right…it’s September. I must reek of California or this guy is guilty of false advertising. Guess I won’t inject my caffeine infusion this morning.

“Thanks anyways,” I smile, and head back to The Beast. I shove the plexiglass window up, which I found lasts about 5 minutes before slithering its way back down.

I head to Lake Michigan and back into a spot overlooking a beach. Lake waves lightly crash on shore with nothing but blue as far as the eye can see. I open the back of The Beast, plop down on the bench next to the bed, and grab my laptop. Alright, alright, alright…this is more like it.

Coursing through emails, I’m reminded I’ve bitten way more off than I can chew. Besides helping execute events in 8 more cities, gaping budget holes in NYC, Boston, and LA stare back at me.

Firing off sponsorship emails and checking in with our team, all I can do is what I can do. Good news is our NYC event RSVPs are off the charts and people are donating at a record clip. My heart fills.

I gaze at Lake Michigan. The water soothing my soul, I trust everything will work out because my heart’s in the right place and I’m working my tail off. Intention, courage, and persistence matter, I remind myself.

Looking back down at my laptop, I see it’s already 5pm. Time to skedaddle to Pittsburgh. I’ve got a six hour drive plus three hours of charging ahead of me. This is gonna be a tough one.

It’s difficult to describe the surreal feeling of driving across Ohio at midnight with a full moon lighting my path while stomping on the floor of an electric RV to the beat of Joe Cocker’s "Feelin’ Alright”.

I’m exhausted, my tailbone is screaming from the uncomfortable seat, massive Trump signs passing me by, but I feel alright, uhhuh. I’m in my element–being the tip of the spear for all the right reasons.

I can’t help but chuckle as I shove the plexiglass window up every five minutes. I’m cruising through BFE (elder-millennial acronym) and there’s a crazy pink glow in the distance. Seat dancing to ‘Thriller’ at 1am, I wonder what the massive pink light could be. Did an alien spaceship just land? Is it a massive rave in the Ohio countryside? A barbie superfan gone wild? I pass a new JESUS SAVES sign. Sure, sure…see you at Hunky Jesus next Easter.

Of course I’m going to check out the light source. Beam me up, please. This is what being on the road is all about. Head towards the light, my son.

Turns out the pink glow is produced by a huge Nature Fresh Farms greenhouse. Womp, womp…I was hoping for aliens–might as well at this point. Oh well…next time.

I pull up to my buddy Ryan’s parent’s house at 3am dazed and confused. Ryan wakes up and lets me in. He’s sleeping on the sofa and gives me the guest bedroom. What a mensch.

I rise in the morning, initially confused about where I am. I see a photo of Ryan with his siblings on the dresser. Ah, right…

I clamber up the stairs, beelining for the coffee machine. COFFEE SAVES. I flip open my laptop, hoping something positive came from yesterday’s email firehose. Ahoy! After over a year of working to get them over the line, Breakthrough Energy confirmed their sponsorship of our Boston Tough Tech Week event with just a few weeks to spare.

I bury my head in my hands, weeping from a sense of relief. “Are you alright, man?,” Ryan asks, sounding a bit concerned. “Yeah, this year has just been a lot. I really needed a win right now,” I explain, wiping tears from my eyes. Truthfully, I’m also confused as to why I started crying. Exhaustion? Stress? Perhaps…I dig deeper.

I realize I’m weeping because my belief in a higher power, whatever you want to call the divine, affirmed its existence yet again. When I put everything on the line for the greater good, helpful hands can emerge at the last minute. The challenge is the support typically doesn’t appear until I’m truly tested–pushed to the brink of utter calamity–faith, worn razor thin, is ultimately the only way through.

Hanging with Ryan and his parents, life is seemingly normal. I try explaining to baby boomers what it is I’m doing and why, and they don’t get it–also normal. Spending the day in a classic Jewish family’s house reminds me of home and I’m comforted, as if wrapped in a childhood blankey.

I board The Beast with Ryan and his father. They’re impressed by how quiet the vehicle is as I back up and are amused by their neighbors’ reactions to a neon yellow Climate Tech Cocktails RV. We're the talk of the ‘hood.

Parking outside InnovatePGH, I’m loving the event poster they made propped up outside the door. How guerilla. I’m excited because InnovatePGH is using this event as a forcing function to kick off the formation of a climate tech innovation ecosystem in Pittsburgh. This is ground zero.

Sporting my Lebowski 2024 shirt to highlight the significance of Pennsylvania at this moment in history, I round up the panelists. Though I typically avoid panels like the plague during our events, I couldn’t resist the urge to facilitate one with Ryan in his hometown. Our discussion about ‘Why Pittsburgh?’ can be found below.

I end our conversation by asking the crowd how many present are students. About half of the room raises their hands. I then ask how many of them want to start a climate tech company–their hands remain raised. Bingo.

I ask these questions because Carnegie Mellon University is #1 in both robotics and AI. Seen those autonomous vehicles roaming city streets yet? You can thank CMU researchers. In other words, Pittsburgh has the brains to spin up some cool climate technologies.

Not to mention Pittsburgh’s history with energy. We’re not far from the nation’s first oil well and the National Energy Technology Laboratory, which created many of the technologies underpinning the fracking revolution. Hopefully we can look back at this gathering in 2-3 years as a seed for several Pittsburgh born and raised climate tech startups.

After mingling and sampling a can of Pittsburgh Brewing Company’s finest, I walk to grab a bite with Ryan and his high school friend. We pop into Primanti’s, apparently a Pittsburgh classic that fueled depression-era truck drivers with hearty sandwiches and fries. Never have I ever eaten fries on a salad—until now. Though the health benefits of the greens were countered by seasoned fries, I admit it was pretty darn tasty.

Not only do I learn about some of Ryan’s teenage antics, but I also get an education on Pittsburgh’s culture. It’s a city of rivers connected by bridges. Apparently, some Pittsburghers hardly venture outside of their neighborhoods during the entirety of their lives, providing an abundance of unique communities. Heading back to Ryan’s, I’m grateful to be in the presence of an old friend after a challenging beginning to the tour. Ryan helps me do a tape job on The Beast’s plexiglass window invisible to the eyes of potential looters passing by.

I give Ryan a big farewell hug and tuck in early to rest for the road ahead to DC first thing tomorrow morning.

Howdy do. We know the constant flow of disturbing news can be overwhelming—and many are tuning out—but we didn’t want to let a potentially interesting opportunity slip through the cracks.

ICYMI, last Friday the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) posted a Request for Information (RFI) soliciting ideas for deregulation.

While it’s clear the federal government is laser-focused on environmental deregulation, there are strong arguments to be made for deregulation that just so happens to support climate tech as well. If you’re going to cut away, might as well go all in, right?

If this administration truly wants to achieve “energy dominance” and make the country self-sufficient, the incoming deregulation tsunami should take an all-of-the-above approach. We should be producing jet fuel from captured carbon, biodesigned palm oil, wool from waste, packaging from seaweed—you get the idea.

Any regulations slowing down such innovation should be cut—and cut immediately.

We strongly encourage all CTC readers with well thought out deregulation ideas to submit proposals for the Deregulation RFI before the May 12th deadline!
